The Queen has honoured a Radstock man who has worked at Kilmersdon Colliery for almost 45 years.
The BEM has been awarded to Gilbert George Duery (Mo Duery’s Father) from Radstock, Somerset.
Mr Duery has been the overman at the colliery since 1937. He started work there in August 1919 as a carting boy, later became a coal getter and in 1935 was made a deputy.
Mr Duery is married and has four boys and two girls.
All four boys at one time worked at Kilmersdon Colliery, but one left a year ago to join the security police in Bristol.
At the colliery now are Harold, a driver employed by the National Coal Board, Keith, an underground fitter and Morton, an apprentice electrician.
